Obituary Notes for Frederick Wilhelm Scharlau
Fred W. Scharlau Fred W. Scharlau, 79, who came to Rice Lake when there was only a small cluster of buildings south of the bridge, died Thursday evening at a Barron hospital of heart failure. Funeral services were held here Monday afternoon at St. John's Lutheran church with the Rev. Reinhard Schoeneck officiating. Mr. Scharlau was born June 4, 1858 near Buffalo, N.Y. While still a young boy, he came to Menomonie where he worked as a driver of a tote team for the Knapp-Stout Co., hauling supplies to the company's various camps. In 1875 he moved to Rice Lake and continued in the employ of this organization. Later he worked for the Rice Lake Lumber Co. and also at the flour mill. He was married Nov. 7, 1883 to Miss Anna Smith at Dobie. Mrs. Scharlau died 25 years ago. Mr. Scharlau is survived by a son, Frederick, Couderay; two daughters, Mrs. Mable Secore and Mrs. Dora Stout, Detroit, Mich., and nine grandchildren. A son, William, and two daughters, Minnie and Laura, preceded their father in death.15
