"I was always told that this couple married in 1848, and emigrated to the United States to avoid conscription into the Prussian Army, and also to make a future for themselves because the family farm would go to the stepfather's heirs. Carl's brother and his wife were supposed to have come with them. They first settled in New York state, and most of the children were born there. Later, they moved to Wisconsin. The first official record found of them was the land deed recorded in 1865 in Dunn County, showing they had paid $125.00 for 80 acres of land at Rusk in Dunn County. At that time in this area, the trees had been cut by the lumber companies, but the families had to remove the stumps before they could plant crops. There were also Indians wandering around in those days.4,9
