Pioneer Resident Passes Away Friday Following Illness of About a Year

Funeral services were held on Monday for the late John F. Smith, age 75 years, from the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart church with Rev. Fr. Crowe officiating. Burial was made in Calvary cemetery here.
Mr. Smith passed away at his home on Friday morning from cancer with which he had been ailing for about a year. His condition became very serious a week prior to his death. He came to Cloquet 30 years ago with his family from Rice Lake, Wis., and during that time was employed as a teamster for the Cloquet mills.
The deceased was born in Buckingham, Canada, and with his parents moved to Chicago, Ill. He was married to Miss Jennie Reed in Rice Lake in 1891. Five children, two daughters and three sons, all of whom are living, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruth LaVoie, Mrs. Gertrude Larson, Duluth; Leo, Cloquet; Hugh and Leslie of Duluth; two sisters, Mrs. Felix Earley, Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Duncan Grey, Tacoma, Wash.; and one brother, William, of Cloquet.
The pall bearers were as follows: Frank Valley, Henry Proulx, Halvor Halvorson, Stewart Walters, Jerry Mahoney and Ed Peltier.39
