Alfred E. Ellsworth Once Cooked for Roosevelt
Alfred E. Ellsworth, former railway engineer, traveler and Civil and Spanish-American war veteran, passed away at his home at 511 W. Douglas St., Saturday evening at the advanced age of 101 years.
Mr. Ellsworth was born March 15, 1832, in Vermont and grew to manhood there. When the Civil war broke out he left home, joining Co. G, 14th Regiment, New York heavy artillery. He served for the duration of the war and during the Spanish-American war he again joined the army. Papers left by him indicate that he was at one time the personal cook of Colonel Theodore Roosevelt on his Rough Rider campaign in Cuba.
After the Spanish-American war he became interested in railroading and was for many years an engineer on the Canadian Northern line.
He was married about three years ago in Rainier, Minn., his home at that time, at the age of 98, to Mrs. Gladys Frasier of this city, a boyhood acquaintance, and last fall the couple moved here where they have made their home since. This was his first and only marriage.
Mr. Ellsworth took part in the last Memorial day exercises here. He was buried with military honors Tuesday afternoon from the Lyle funeral home, Rev. A.F. Acker officiating and interment took place in Nora cemetery.37
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon from the Lyle Funeral Home for Alfred E. Ellsworth, 101, Civil and Spanish-American War veteran, who passed away suddenly on Saturday evening at his home on West Douglas Street. Mr. Ellsworth had been in good spirits and health when he retired and was found dead a short time after retiring. After the Spanish-American Ware, e was an engineer on the Canadian Northern line and came to make his home in this city last summer. He was married three years ago in Rainier, Minn., to Mrs. Gladys Frasier of this city, his only marriage.
Mr. Ellsworth took part in the last Memorial Day exercises here and was buried with military honors. The Rev. A. F. Acker of the Methodist church officiated at the services and interment was made in Nora Cemetery.4
